Pacific oyster

The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is more robust than the flat oyster, and it is highly adaptable. The Pacific oyster shares habitat with the flat oyster, but it also withstands drying and grows on sandy bottoms. The two oyster species share food source, as well as spawning time and place. This strong competition creates challenges for the less adaptable flat oyster.

Even though the Pacific oyster is viewed as a threat, there is a commercial value. Both oysters are highly appreciated human food! However, as oysters are prone to eating algae plankton and viruses that could make humans sick, it is important to first check that they are safe to eat.
