Food

Pilot whales are not very picky in terms of food. If there is a lot of cephalopods in the area they eat cephalopods (e.g. squid and octopus). If this food is not available they eat fish (e.g., cod, dogfish, hake, herring, mackerel and turbot). The Pilot whales living on shore of Norway are mainly feeding on short-finned squid.

To get their food Pilot whales can dive up to 600 meter (apr. 2000 feet) and stay submersed for up to 16 minutes. Most of the time they feed at night and use their echo location (sonar) to find prey.
